Creative Bulletin n.103

This week Andrea closed Scaffold, the tool for teachers that we’re developing for the European Community (have you looked at the technical document up there? It makes us look like engineers 😂). Meanwhile Matteo kept on working on BAD’s booklet, our tool for Business-Aware Design: he wrote 7000 words and he’s only scratched the surface!

Parenthesis. During one of our brainstorming we thought about a name for Fabula for editing: Folio. What do you think about it? Or would you stick with Fabula for Editing?

🦊🦊🦊 How we felt this week

It’s been weird since we’ve done less than usual, quantitatively. And we were less stressed so we have less to talk about which makes us feel, ironically, at fault. It’s a good way to stop and think about how often we fill our day with things to do just to feel important 😅 and we should stop with this bad habit.

🍓🍓🍓 Creative thoughts

Matteo took advantage of this change of pace to go back and read some of Carlos Castaneda’s work and he was fascinated by the concept of renouncing one's personal story and all its byproducts. We create a character for ourselves that we have to keep up with, adding resolutions and habits to it: «I’m a responsible person so I wake up early every morning», «I care about my health so I go to the gym three times a week». And these habits delimit us to the point that it becomes difficult, almost destabilizing, to elude them.

👉 But isn’t this the fun part? What happens when we decide to break the boring pattern of our everyday life? What happens if we don’t go to the gym for one week, if we decide to drink a glass of wine for lunch, if for once we don’t pay for parking and we risk getting a ticket? What happens when we find out that the person we were up to a minute ago is not necessarily who we need to be today, and maybe freedom is actually, not knowing who we are?

👉 In the wake of these thoughts, we reevaluated those Americanish quotes: «If you want to be a writer, you must write everyday», «If you want to be an artist, make art everyday» etc. We’ve always interpreted these as exhortations of personal will with quite a vehement wink to discipline: if you want to do something, just do it; chop chop.

But are we sure that’s the actual teaching behind it?

When Matteo moved in the tower in August to finish Mario3, he told the owner of the house who started calling him «the writer». That’s right: that’s the life he was living. He didn’t bother explaining to her: «It’s only for this month. You know I was a publisher with a nervous breakdown ‘till yesterday».

🌈 Takeaway: let’s experiment living the life we want
If we write every morning, we’re experimenting living the life of writers. If we act everyday, that’s the life of actors. If we do sport everyday, that’s the athlete’s life. We mustn't do that to reach a goal; if we’re doing it right now, we already are what we’re experimenting. Who cares if yesterday we were teachers, lawyers, therapists, pizza makers, salespeople, heads of state. Today we’re experimenting with something else.

And you? What life would you like to experiment with? 🐈

With ❤️,
Matteo and Andrea
