Creative Bulletin n.205
Last night we held a new workshop on creating creative tools at IAAD in Turin (Institute of Applied Arts and Design), with the goal of inspiring designers between the ages of 19 and 21 to develop products like ours. The kids came up with some promising concepts ๐ Next week, at the second meeting, we will see the results!
The responsibility of creativity. Every once in a while I get an email from a user saying that they expected more from our tools, but when I ask them if they read the instruction booklet and what specifically they expected, they usually stops responding.
I feel like screaming in those moments: ยซAnd what did you think? That Fabula was going to write the story for you?ยป, however, I realize that it would not serve any purpose (I mean venting helps ๐)
I think there is a misunderstanding with Sefirot. Our way of talking about creativity, as if it were within everyone's reach, perhaps makes people think that creativity is something simple and expected.
Well, it is not.
We provide tools that can speed up the process, save time, help you when you feel lost, and support you along the way, but you are the one that has to put the creativity in. Writing a book is not a cake walk, developing a project is not easy, structuring a presentation, running a business is hard. And no one is under any obligation to do it: if you don't, the world moves on anyway.
Creativity is not a right or even an obligation. It is a responsibility. If we want to, we can be creative. But we have to decide.
Some people thought my attitude was a bit on the capitalist side in the last bulletin, mostly when I talked about never quitting ๐ Damn...it was commitment that I was referring to. I asked Simone to produce 100 shots of each of the concepts he came up with. Why do you think? Because I like being an obnoxious boss? No, because it is in the action that creativity forms. Do you think intรนiti's package came out perfect the first time around? Nope! Fabula Kids' package needed fifty reworkings. Edito maybe a hundred.
Do you think that writers jot down the first draft and then says: Alright! This is it! LOL. It doesn't work that way. Creativity is much, much more than that: it's a profound journey, and you have to have the courage and the will to embark on it.
๐ Creative takeaway: be serious about it
Today I am writing for the creatives who read the bulletin (even those who strive to be), and you are otherwise you wouldn't have bought our products. Dedicating yourself to a novel, a work of art, a personal project, a dream, is serious and important work, because it's about you: we put ourselves into it. It is not a joke, or a hobby.
Let's open our eyes: creativity is a choice and a commitment.
And with Sefirot I would like to inspire you to put all the strength you have into it, to do what you really want to do.
With โค๏ธ,
Matteo
