Creative Bulletin n.267

Over the weekend, I holed up at home and finished shooting the video for the launch of Fabula for Non-Fiction (coming out in just a few weeks 🤟). Let us know what you think >> https://vimeo.com/1071360582

As some of you may have noticed, we're already behind schedule compared to the timeline we originally announced. But, as always, we've run into setbacks, delays, unexpected bureaucratic tasks (those drive me up the wall more than anything 😅), and so here we are, running a bit late.

The anxiety of creativity. Last week I started feeling anxious because there was just so much to do. More than anything, I was stressed about the video. “The video!” I'd be torturing myself about it even while doing other things. “When the heck will I ever get the chance to work on the video???”

Feeling anxious about this kind of stuff is totally normal. Like when you're halfway through a novel and the unwritten part feels like an impossible mountain to climb, or when you're in the middle of a complex project and can't even begin to imagine the end. It’s part of the creative process, and we all have to face it. Even though I’m talking about it calmly now, I still get overwhelmed from time to time. I think it’s just part of being human.

So let’s play. On Friday night I decided I’d dedicate the whole weekend to it, and take my time. In the end, everything happened—tripod didn’t work, camera settings were all wrong—but still, it only took me 6–7 hours, and I was honestly surprised it all came together so quickly.

🌈 Creative takeaway: creativity has to be grounded in action

Almost every time I make myself do something, it takes less time than I expect. But every time I think about doing it, I just end up anxious. Haha. I guess it’s a fundamental truth about creativity: it’s good to pause now and then and reflect on what we’re doing and how we’re doing it, but we should try not to get lost in our thoughts.
Instead, let’s do: let’s bring something into the world and see what it’s like. Worst-case scenario? We have to reshoot the video 😅

With ❤️,
Matteo
