Creative Bulletin n.267

Over the weekend, I holed up at home and finished shooting the video for the launch of Fabula for Non-Fiction (coming out in just a few weeks šŸ¤Ÿ). Let us know what you think >> https://vimeo.com/1071360582

As some of you may have noticed, we're already behind schedule compared to the timeline we originally announced. But, as always, we've run into setbacks, delays, unexpected bureaucratic tasks (those drive me up the wall more than anything šŸ˜…), and so here we are, running a bit late.

The anxiety of creativity. Last week I started feeling anxious because there was just so much to do. More than anything, I was stressed about the video. ā€œThe video!ā€ I'd be torturing myself about it even while doing other things. ā€œWhen the heck will I ever get the chance to work on the video???ā€

Feeling anxious about this kind of stuff is totally normal. Like when you're halfway through a novel and the unwritten part feels like an impossible mountain to climb, or when you're in the middle of a complex project and can't even begin to imagine the end. Itā€™s part of the creative process, and we all have to face it. Even though Iā€™m talking about it calmly now, I still get overwhelmed from time to time. I think itā€™s just part of being human.

So letā€™s play. On Friday night I decided Iā€™d dedicate the whole weekend to it, and take my time. In the end, everything happenedā€”tripod didnā€™t work, camera settings were all wrongā€”but still, it only took me 6ā€“7 hours, and I was honestly surprised it all came together so quickly.

šŸŒˆ Creative takeaway: creativity has to be grounded in action

Almost every time I make myself do something, it takes less time than I expect. But every time I think about doing it, I just end up anxious. Haha. I guess itā€™s a fundamental truth about creativity: itā€™s good to pause now and then and reflect on what weā€™re doing and how weā€™re doing it, but we should try not to get lost in our thoughts.
Instead, letā€™s do: letā€™s bring something into the world and see what itā€™s like. Worst-case scenario? We have to reshoot the video šŸ˜…

Matteo
