Creative Bulletin n.283

Last week, I asked you to share your creative blocks (thank you to those who did đ)
It seems that one of the most common ones is related to money. âWill I earn enough or end up failing financially? Will I be able to support myself and my family?â
I made a video specifically about this. You can watch it here >> https://youtu.be/I0jITkrm4aU?si=O9lfiZRaXYUvqJ-9 or by clicking on the image above.
Itâs a very real problem. Weâve definitely been conditioned when it comes to career and money: almost all parents are afraid their children might become artists, singers, or writers, but on the other hand, no one has an issue with engineers or doctors. Iâve never heard a parent say, âDonât become a doctor, you might not find a jobâ đ
The problem is, that conditioning isnât totally baseless. Itâs true: being a doctor is safer.
The same goes for comparing being an employee to being an entrepreneur or freelancer: an employee is in a more secure position, while those who work for themselves take on more risk. Thatâs just a fact.
Itâs okay to be afraid. Choosing a creative path really does involve financial risk. I could add that not choosing it carries existential risks, but I donât think that helps much with unblocking yourself.
What really helped me was realizing it was possible to generate value through what I do. When you find out that passers-by will actually pay you for a slushie, suddenly the idea of opening a kiosk doesnât seem so far-fetched, does it?
đ Creative takeaway: raise the stakes and fail as soon as possible
Since The Creative Ambush came out, lots of people have asked me what secrets I didnât share. What did I actually do, in practical terms, to succeed with my products?
Honestly, I donât know. What I can tell you is that, in some strange way, Iâve always tried to fail as quickly as possible.
âIâll put it on Kickstarter now and if it doesnât work⌠thatâs it!â
âIâll try selling them to bookstores, then online, and if that doesnât work⌠thatâs it!â
If youâve got an idea and the money issue is whatâs holding you back, you might as well try it as soon as you can.
If it doesnât work, at least youâve ripped off the band-aid.
If it does workâwow, youâve just found a way to stop being afraid đš
With â¤ď¸,
Matteo
