I’ve just finished laying out my new manual How to Lead a Creative Life 🚀 It might be released in April!
Making ourselves available. When Lino and I meet on Tuesdays to work, we never know exactly what we’ll end up working on. Of course, we know our meetings revolve around strategy and ads, but we don’t have a real agenda. We sit down, take stock, then start talking and see where the conversation leads us.
I’ve realized that, even though the goal of our meetings is anything but artistic, this attitude has something romantic about it: we make ourselves available so that inspiration can show up and take us somewhere we hadn’t even imagined, even if it means risking getting nowhere.
A risk worth taking. Last week, for example, we ended up working on a seemingly unlikely idea that came to us on the spot and turned out to be the best one of the month.
It’s the same attitude I have when I sit down to write my newsletters or my novels, when I jot down ideas for courses. I carve out the time and stay open, waiting.
Maybe it’s worth starting to use this approach even when we’re doing more mechanical tasks 😅
🌈 Creative takeaway: staying and raising the intensity
I’ve always believed that a creative person needs to know how to sit with discomfort (will I manage it or not? Will I find a good idea? Oh no, what if I come up with something terrible?) now I’m realizing it’s important to push ourselves further. Not just stay in the discomfort, but actually feel the pressure building.
That’s when something really happens, when we step into the room and feel that we want, want, want to find a good idea, and the energy keeps rising and rising, and we can barely contain ourselves, and then, suddenly, it arrives. Maybe it’s the best idea in the world, maybe we need to raise the intensity even more.
This is the process. We just have to hold on tight 😂
