Creative Bulletin n.343

Yesterday we released the second episode of our Surviving with… course series. If you have a creative project, I highly recommend checking it out. You can find it here.

Peace and lightness. During sessions with intùiti, one of the things people bring up most often is the desire to feel more at peace. I wish I felt more at peace, they tell me. I wish I felt lighter.

I know the feeling well because it happens to me too: especially when I’m doing something I care about, I can feel overwhelmed or worried, and I find myself wishing for a little peace.

And this is where we risk misunderstanding what serenity really is.

Serenity, if we think of it as the absence of thoughts and worries, is just an illusion: if I devote myself to something that matters to me, I will inevitably feel a constant intensity, and I’ll never truly be serene.

A solution. Rather than wishing I had no thoughts or worries, it makes more sense to look at what’s weighing me down and making me anxious. For example, I might realize that I find running live courses frustrating because I have to send students reminder emails before every session; or I might get annoyed dealing with the absurd bureaucracy involved in accepting the Carta Docente (an Italian government voucher for teachers to spend on books, courses, and other educational activities).

🌈 Creative takeaway: cut what you don’t like

Once I can see what’s weighing me down, I can also see that I have the power to cut it out. I can choose to offer recorded courses only. I can stop accepting the Carta Docente altogether and avoid all the bureaucratic hassle that comes with it. I can also get rid of all the projects and collaborations I’ve grown tired of.
As I gradually cut out what I don’t like (and stop complaining about what I don’t like), I realize I’m better able to handle the intensity. My center becomes steadier.
Now that’s a kind of serenity that makes sense ❤️

With love,
Matteo
